3500/22M Transient Data Interface Module Datasheet-Bently Nevada Machinery Condition Monitoring 161581 Rev. AB

Description

The 3500/22M Transient Data Interface (TDI) is the interface between the 3500 monitoring system and compatible software (System 1 Condition Monitoring and Diagnostic software and 3500 System Configuration software). The TDI combines the function of a 3500/20 Rack Interface Module (RIM) with the data collection capability of a communication processor such as TDXnet.

The TDI resides in the slot adjacent to the power supplies of a 3500 rack. It interfaces with M series monitors (3500/40M, 3500/42M, etc.) to continuously collect steady state and transient dynamic (waveform) data and pass this data through an Ethernet link to the host software. Refer to the Compatibility section at the end of this document for more information.

Static data capture capability is standard with the TDI. However, using an optional Channel Enabling Disk will allow the TDI to capture dynamic and high-resolution transient data as well. The TDI incorporates the communication processor function within the 3500 rackBENTLY 1900/65A-00-01-01-01-01 Industrial Module

Although the TDI provides certain functions common to the entire rack, it is not part of the critical monitoring path and has no effect on the proper, normal operation of the overall monitor system for automatic machinery protection. Every 3500 rack requires one TDI or RIM, which always occupies Slot 1 (next to the power supplies).

I/O Module Signal Common Terminal

Both versions of the TDI I/O Module now include a 2-pin connector for connecting Signal Common to a single point Instrument Ground for the rack. When this is done, the selector switch on the side of the Power Input Module (PIM) must be slid in the direction of the arrow marked “HP” to isolate Signal Common from chassis (safety) ground.

Keyphasor Inputs

Supports the four 3500 system Keyphasor signals. The speed range support is based on the number of dynamic channels enabled:

Supports multiple events per revolution speed inputs up to 20 kHz

Startup/Coastdown Data

Data collected at selected increments of speed and time

Increasing and decreasing speed intervals are independently programmable

Initiation of transient data collection based on detecting the machine speed within one of two programmable windows

The number of transient events that can be collected is only limited by the available memory in the module

Alarm Data Collection

Pre- and post-alarm data

Static values collected at one second intervals for 10 minutes before the event and 1 minute after the event

Static values collected at 100 ms intervals for 20 seconds before the event and 10 seconds after the event

2.5 minutes of waveform data collected at 10-second intervals before the alarm and 1 minute of waveform data collected at 10-second intervals after the alarm

Static Values Data

TDI will collect the static values including the values measured by the monitors.

TDI provides four nX static values for each point. Amplitude and phase are returned for each of the values.

Waveform Sampling

Collection of waveforms for 48 channels.

DC-coupled waveforms

Simultaneous Synchronous and Asynchronous data sampled during all operational modes

Trade war fallout: Cancellations of Chinese freight ships begin as bookings plummet

Key Points

The number of canceled sailings of freight vessels out of China is picking up as ocean carriers attempt to manage a pullback in orders due to the trade war and tariffs.

A steep decline in containers being shipped to the U.S. will have a big impact on the supply chain, from port to trucking, rail and warehouse economics.

“We won’t go to zero containers, but we will see a decrease in containers and as a result, in the future we will see a massive raft of blank sailings announced,” one freight expert tells CNBC.

U.S. importers are being notified of an increase in canceled sailings by freight ships out of China as ocean carriers try to balance the pullback in orders resulting from President Trump’s tariffs and the escalation of tensions in the trade war.

A total of 80 blank, or canceled, sailings out of China have been recorded by freight company HLS Group. It wrote in a recent note to clients that with the trade war between China and the U.S. leading to a demand plummet, carriers have started to suspend or adjust transpacific services.

Major ocean freight alliance ONE has “suspended until further notice” a route it had previously been planning to bring back in May, which would include ports of Qingdao, Ningbo, Shanghai, Pusan, Vancouver, and Tacoma. Meanwhile, an existing route is planning to cancel its port call at Wilmington, North Carolina.

The impact of the diminished freight container traffic to North America will be significant for many links in the economy and supply chain, including the ports and logistics companies moving the freight. If each sailing was carrying 8,000 to 10,000 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units), that would equal a decline in freight traffic of between 640,000-800,000 containers, and lead to decreased crane operations at the ports, lower fees that could be collected, and declines in container pick-ups and transports by trucks, rails, and to warehouses for storage.

The World Trade Organization warned on Wednesday that the outlook for global trade has “deteriorated sharply” in the wake of Trump’s tariffs plan. JB Hunt shares hit their lowest level since November 2020 after commentary during the trucking company’s earnings call about the uncertainty from tariffs.

“We have no way of knowing how significant this drop in orders will be on vessel schedules,” said Alan Murphy, CEO of Sea-Intelligence. “There are no models to extrapolate this. What I can tell you is the majority of containers on the vessels servicing the Asia to U.S. trade routes is China. We won’t go to zero containers, but we will see a decrease in containers and as a result, in the future, we will see a massive raft of blank sailings announced.”

China accounts for approximately 30% of all U.S. containerized imports (down from 37% in 2018), but accounts for approximately 54% of all U.S. containerized imports from Asia (down from 67% in 2018).

Bruce Chan, director of global logistics & future mobility for Stifel, said the tariff policy has created significant uncertainty with respect to consumer demand, and retailers have been positioning their businesses conservatively with inventory, especially given “scar tissue” from the recent overstock after the post-Covid supply chain squeeze from 2021-2022. “That uncertainty is beginning to manifest in blanked container ship sailings on core eastbound transpacific lanes, in our view, opening the potential for a double-digit decline in inbound containerized imports as early as next month,” he said.

Booking volumes from the last week of March to first week of April across global and U.S. trade lanes plummeted. There were sharp decreases in bookings across several categories, including apparel & accessories; and wool, fabrics & textiles, both down over 50%. Major product categories from China that are moved in containers include apparel, toys, furniture, and sports equipment, all of which are subject to steep tariffs.

As a result of the decrease in containers, ocean carriers will not only cancel vessels, but also adjust or cancel vessel routes commonly called “vessel strings,” such as the ONE service from China to Vancouver and Tacoma. These routes dedicating vessels to move the ocean freight at specific ports take months of planning. The elimination of vessels also impacts U.S. exports bound for Asia and relying on ships traveling in both directions.

Ocean carriers need to move full vessels to generate a return on investment, but it is not in their best interest to use large vessels if they cannot be filled. To ensure vessels are used at full capacity, carriers have a number of ways to alter the vessel strings. Stretching out ship arrivals by canceling sailings is an option for container volume to better match capacity. According to Murphy, 99% of vessel services are weekly and it takes a vessel approximately seven weeks to make a round trip.

“During Covid, ocean carriers parked their vessels for maintenance,” Murphy said. “Ocean carriers can also blank (cancel) a sailing, omit vessel strings entirely, use smaller vessels, or slow steam the vessels where they are traveling longer.”

These measures will cut the available vessel capacity for containers, according to Murphy, which helps remaining ships to be filled, with uncertain implications for overall pricing in the ocean freight business. While a decline in sailings could lead to a drop in prices, during Covid, blank sailings were identified by shippers around the world as a reason for container rates that spiked as high as $30,000. In that case, shippers say the ocean carriers canceled sailings for longer than needed.

Vietnam continues to gain on China

The global supply chain demand and pricing situation remains fluid and subject to sharp short-term swings tied to tariffs policy. As Chinese trade comes under strain, a key metric in ocean freight rates shows Vietnam surging in early April.

The “mid-low” ocean rates, which represent the costs of shipping goods for a larger-sized shipper on a particular ocean route, have jumped by 43% since March 30 for Vietnam. Xeneta calculates the market mid-low and market mid-high segments by looking at the values of the 25 and 75 percentiles of a trade lane rate.

“The fact that the lower end of the market has been rising shows the heat is on,” said Peter Sand, chief analyst at Xeneta. He said that is continuing after Trump’s decision to pause what he called “reciprocal” tariffs on countries other than China for 90 days.

“Shippers large and small all have to pay up for frontloading, as the ‘pause’ made the pulling forward of freight possible again,” Sand added.

This demand from U.S. shippers importing goods can be seen in the increase in container shipping spot rates on the Ho Chi Minh City to Los Angeles ports route, jumping by 24% going into April.

According to data compiled by Xeneta for 2025, the spread between China’s largest container port, Shanghai, and Vietnam’s largest container port, Ho Chi Minh City, has also narrowed per forty-foot equivalent unit (FEU) for shipments to the ports of LA and Long Beach.

Even with increased costs for shippers, they will continue to bring in imports from non-China nations because the situation remains highly unpredictable, Sand said. “There is every possibility the higher tariffs come into effect 90 days from now or even at an earlier stage,” he added.

How can we do our own thing under the impact of the “tariff war”?

As the United States launches another round of tariff wars and disrupts the world trade order, how can we focus our attention inward and firmly do our own thing?

Local governments actively respond to the “tariff war” to help enterprises meet the challenge

In response to the impact of the US tariff increase, companies in Chongqing and Fujian have recently made active adjustments and responded proactively.

In a foreign trade company in Bishan District, Chongqing, workers are stepping up to rush to produce a batch of orders to be sent to Russia.

Luo Yong, head of a Chongqing New Energy Co., Ltd.: Since last year, we have been actively expanding emerging markets such as the EU and Russia to reduce the risk of dependence on a single market. We expect exports to emerging markets to increase by 20% this year, which can offset our losses in the US market.

Suman, a British customer, is about to sign an order worth $5 million.

British businessman Su Man: We are very happy to visit this factory. The product quality is very good. We hope to maintain a long-term cooperative relationship.

It is not just this company. The reporter found that since this year, many foreign trade companies in Chongqing have relied on independent and controllable innovation capabilities to optimize the supply chain, respond to external risks through brand premium, increase profit margins, and fight against tariff barriers. According to Chongqing Customs, in the first quarter of this year, local independent brand products exported 54.2 billion yuan, an increase of 14%, accounting for 56% of the total export value.

Similarly, this foreign trade clothing company in Quanzhou, Fujian, exports more than 90% of its products, of which more than 30% are sold to the United States. Faced with the current tariff situation, the company and its American customers have agreed to split the cost into two and each bear half. The confidence in doing so lies in the confidence in the core competitiveness of their own products.

Zhao Wenhong, deputy general manager of a clothing company in Quanzhou: We have registered our own product patents and formed stickiness with customers. No matter how high the tariffs are, they will still buy our products.

On the one hand, we increase innovation and adjust the market direction, and on the other hand, the government also supports the company.

Zhao Wenhong, deputy general manager of a clothing company in Quanzhou: For example, in terms of financing, loan interest rates, fee reduction and tax reduction, these give our company more support and reduce the pressure on our company. At least in the process of tug-of-war, let our company be more confident and persist longer.

At present, the Fujian Provincial Department of Commerce, Customs, Taxation and other departments are actively improving the reserve policy to help foreign trade companies tide over the difficulties.

How to help the affected foreign trade enterprises tide over the difficulties?

Facing the damage of US tariff bullying to the global trade order, many places have taken action to help foreign trade enterprises cope with market challenges. From the government to the society, how can we help enterprises affected by US tariffs tide over the difficulties?

Wan Zhe, professor and economics expert at Beijing Normal University, analyzed that from the government level, it is mainly based on systematic policy support and strategic guidance. The combination of policies and institutional guarantees will be visible in the future:

In terms of rule game and supply chain reconstruction, my country has already countered the United States, and will also cooperate with other countries and multilateral organizations to weaken the actual impact of US tariffs. In terms of fiscal and taxation policies, it will also directly empower. At the same time, special subsidies will be provided, and some special foreign trade emergency or relief funds will be established. In terms of exchange rate and tariff risk hedging, financial institutions will be encouraged to develop customized products such as tariff insurance to help them lock in costs. In terms of market diversification and domestic demand activation, new market and regional layout will be developed, the integration of domestic and foreign trade will be accelerated, and various channels will be coordinated to open up green channels for foreign trade quality products.

Experts analyzed that for the social level, it is mainly market-oriented coordination and ecological empowerment. Industry associations and industrial chains should cooperate better, including information sharing and collective bargaining.

For enterprises, in the future, they should continue to strengthen their own capacity building and strengthen transformation and upgrading. Including product differentiation, shifting from OEM to independent brands, continuous brand upgrading, developing tariff-friendly products, lightweight design, modular assembly, and reducing the tax rate corresponding to product classification tax numbers. At the same time, regionalization and flexible production of the supply chain are also carried out, and the form of small orders and fast response is promoted, and digital systems are used to quickly switch orders to reduce inventory backlogs.

In the future, a “policy + market + technology” support system should be built. The government stabilizes the basic market through a combination of policies to reduce costs, expand markets, and strengthen innovation. The reliance on social forces, industry coordination, channel empowerment, and financial innovation will improve the risk resistance of enterprises. Ultimately, a benign interaction of government guidance, market dominance, and enterprise initiative should be formed. The key is to help enterprises shift from passive response to tariffs to active optimization of global layout. Through technological upgrades, brand premiums, and supply chain resilience, external pressure can be transformed into an endogenous driving force for high-quality development.

How should we make efforts to do our own thing?

Previously, the Ministry of Commerce stated that under the current tariff level, the market has no possibility of bearing US products exported to my country. If the US continues to impose tariffs on Chinese products exported to the US, China will ignore it. Since we have adopted an attitude of “ignoring it”, where should we focus our attention first?

Wan Zhe said that the key points we should focus on now are first the development of the domestic market and the stimulation of domestic demand. In the future, the government will also give a series of industrial policies to support the development of related domestic enterprises and improve their global competitiveness. In terms of key technological breakthroughs, a group of excellent enterprises have emerged, such as semiconductors, new energy, and biomedicine. In the future, there will be better development in improving the resilience of the supply chain. Continuously increasing R&D investment and talent training can support the further transformation and upgrading of the industry.

Experts predict that the future global market will be a diversified reconstruction, including the development of new markets, and the deepening of regional and cooperation. What is very important is the normative opening and rule reshaping:

Connect with the world’s high standards, participate in the reform of the OECD global minimum tax rate, and prevent multinational companies from transferring production capacity. Include digital tariff mutual recognition clauses in free trade agreements. Protect multilateralism and work with the EU and BRICS countries to promote the reform of the WTO dispute settlement mechanism. At the same time, provide financing for green infrastructure for developing countries and enhance the voice of world rules.

The essence is to use economic laws as weapons and strategic determination as support to achieve a transformation from passive response to active leadership, seek stability internally, seek change externally, and seek progress in innovation. This self-centered strategic choice not only reflects the determination to be patient, but also provides a de-hegemonic Chinese solution for global trade management.

Focus on building a community with a shared future for neighboring countries and strive to create a new situation in neighboring work

The Central Conference on Neighboring Work was held in Beijing from April 8 to 9. Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee, President of the State, and Chairman of the Central Military Commission, attended the meeting and delivered an important speech, systematically summarizing the achievements and experience of my country’s neighboring work since the new era, scientifically analyzing the situation, and clarifying the goals, tasks, ideas and measures of neighboring work in the future period.

General Secretary Xi Jinping’s important speech aroused enthusiastic response among the delegates. Based on their work reality, they talked about their learning experience and implementation plans of the spirit of the meeting, and expressed that they would thoroughly implement the requirements put forward in the General Secretary’s important speech, focus on building a community of shared future for the surrounding areas, and strive to create a new situation in neighboring work.

In 2013, at the first symposium on neighboring diplomacy since the founding of the People’s Republic of China, General Secretary Xi Jinping proposed the concept of neighboring diplomacy of being friendly, sincere, beneficial and accommodating, leading China to open up a new realm of friendly cooperation with neighboring countries. Over the past decade, neighboring work has achieved historic achievements and undergone historic changes. Today, China has reached a consensus on building a community of shared future with 17 neighboring countries, forming “two major clusters” of communities of shared future in the Indochina Peninsula and Central Asia.

“China has always placed its neighboring diplomacy at the top of its overall diplomatic agenda, and ASEAN is the priority of China’s neighboring diplomacy.” Chinese Ambassador to Malaysia Ouyang Yujing said that under the joint leadership of General Secretary Xi Jinping and Malaysian leaders, China and Malaysia have reached an important consensus on building a community with a shared future, and have achieved fruitful cooperation results in the fields of politics, economy, trade, and cultural exchanges. China-Malaysia cooperation is a microcosm of China-ASEAN cooperation. “Under the strategic guidance of the leaders of the two countries, China-Malaysia relations will surely reach a new level, and China-ASEAN cooperation will also open up a new situation.”

Building a “Central Asian Cluster” of comprehensive strategic partners, establishing the China-Central Asia mechanism, and promoting the great development of the SCO… Han Chunlin, Chinese Ambassador to Kazakhstan, said that the historic leap and historic achievements in China’s relations with Central Asian countries are fundamentally due to the scientific guidance of Xi Jinping’s diplomatic thought and the leadership of General Secretary Xi Jinping. General Secretary Xi Jinping proposed major concepts and propositions such as building a community with a shared future for mankind, the global development initiative, the global security initiative, and the global civilization initiative, which provided important conceptual guidance for the development of the China-Central Asia mechanism and the SCO.

The meeting pointed out that my country’s current relations with its neighbors are in the best period since modern times, and it has also entered an important stage of deep linkage between the surrounding pattern and the world’s changes. my country has a vast territory and a long border. The surrounding areas are an important foundation for achieving development and prosperity, a focus for maintaining national security, a priority for managing the overall diplomatic situation, and the key to promoting the building of a community with a shared future for mankind. We must examine the surrounding areas with a global perspective and enhance our sense of responsibility and mission in doing a good job in the surrounding areas.

“The world today is full of chaos and the century-old changes are accelerating. Many countries have fallen into unrest or even war. In contrast, China has a harmonious political environment, people live and work in peace and contentment, and the economy has stabilized and improved. The Party Central Committee with Comrade Xi Jinping as the core has taken charge of the overall situation, maintained a high degree of strategic determination, and responded to various challenges firmly and steadily. This is the greatest confidence for us to do a good job in diplomacy, and it is also the fundamental reason why China is highly respected on the international stage and its international influence is increasing.” Ambassador Fu Cong, China’s permanent representative to the United Nations, said that we must unswervingly implement the concept of a community with a shared future for mankind, continuously promote the reform and improvement of global governance, and safeguard the interests of the vast number of developing countries.

Jiang Zaidong, Chinese Ambassador to Pakistan, said that General Secretary Xi Jinping proposed the “Belt and Road” initiative, which showed the broad world sentiment of the leader of a big party and a big country. The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor is a pilot project of the Belt and Road Initiative. It has attracted more than 25 billion US dollars in direct investment and created more than 230,000 jobs. It has not only improved the level of China-Pakistan cooperation, but also promoted Pakistan’s economic and social development. We will continue to promote high-quality joint construction of the Belt and Road Initiative in accordance with the deployment of the General Secretary, and make greater contributions to promoting the building of a community with a shared future for mankind. At the same time, we will thoroughly implement the overall national security concept and effectively safeguard the security of overseas interests.

“In Mongolia, where I work, many people have never forgotten the invitation issued by the General Secretary to “take the express train of China’s development” and are happy to talk about the General Secretary’s statement that “one flower blooms but not spring, a hundred flowers bloom and spring fills the garden.” China-Mongolia relations are a vivid portrayal of China’s sharing of breath and destiny with its neighboring countries.” Shen Minjuan, Chinese Ambassador to Mongolia, said that the 21st century must be the Asian century, and China’s neighboring diplomacy must have great potential. We must adhere to Xi Jinping’s diplomatic thought as the fundamental guideline, seek progress in stability, keep the right path and innovate, and constantly create a new situation in neighboring work, so that Asia will continue to be a stable plate and a highland of development, and serve the Chinese-style modernization construction, the construction of a strong country, and the great cause of national rejuvenation.

Ambassador Hou Yanqi, head of the Chinese Mission to ASEAN, said that China and ASEAN are geographically adjacent and culturally connected. They have established a comprehensive strategic partnership and have been each other’s largest trading partners for five consecutive years. China and ASEAN belong to the global South and both advocate Asian values and respect the diversity of civilizations. ASEAN recognizes China’s development path and philosophy and believes that China is an indispensable partner for all countries to achieve modernization. China firmly supports ASEAN in maintaining the central position of the regional cooperation framework, and promotes ASEAN to establish close ties with the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, BRICS, etc., jointly practice true multilateralism and open regionalism, and jointly safeguard international fairness and justice and the interests of the vast number of developing countries. We will fully and thoroughly implement the spirit of General Secretary Xi Jinping’s important speech, promote the building of a closer China-ASEAN community of shared future, and create a more favorable surrounding environment for the comprehensive promotion of Chinese-style modernization.

Recently, the United States has abused tariffs on all trading partners, including China, seriously infringed on the legitimate rights and interests of all countries, seriously violated the rules of the World Trade Organization, seriously damaged the rules-based multilateral trading system, and seriously impacted the stability of the global economic order, causing strong opposition from the international community, including countries around China.

The delegates said that open cooperation is a historical trend, and mutual benefit and win-win are what people want. We must stand firmly on the right side of history and the progress of human civilization and, together with neighboring countries, resolutely oppose the idea that “might is right” and jointly safeguard international fairness and justice and the legitimate rights and interests of all countries.

Experts: After the tariff exceeds 60%, it will make no difference if we increase it any further

On April 11, according to media reports, some experts pointed out that the tariff dispute is limited. As long as the tariff is increased to 60%-70%, it is actually no different from increasing it to 500%, and no business can be done.

He also pointed out that since the United States is an unreliable and selfish image, China must show rationality and fairness. We continue to remain open, and everyone will naturally have a choice.

Analysts believe that in order to cope with the US tariffs, US retailers may need to increase prices by 10% to 12%. The tariffs will also push up the prices of mobile phones, TVs and other products, and suppress the US electronic product consumer market.

In this tariff storm, Apple has been hit the most. Recently, many institutions have lowered their target prices for Apple. Among them, Morgan Stanley lowered Apple’s target price from US$252 to US$220 and maintained its overweight rating. Goldman Sachs lowered Apple’s target price from US$294 to US$242 and maintained its buy rating.

If Apple chooses to fully pass on the costs brought by tariffs to consumers, the price of Apple phones is expected to increase by 30%-40%.

Inside Isomorphic Labs, the secretive AI life sciences startup spun off from Google DeepMind

Key Points

Isomorphic Labs was spun out of Google DeepMind, after the tech giant achieved one of the biggest biological breakthroughs in the last 50 years.

Demis Hassabis is at the helm of both Isomorphic and DeepMind, the Google division at the forefront of the search company’s efforts to compete in the tech industry’s AI race.

On Wednesday, Isomorphic and Google DeepMind made AlphaFold3 available to the scientific community, for non-commercial use.

With a fresh $600 million, Isomorphic is setting out to achieve its ultimate goal: to “solve all disease” through AI-powered drug discovery.

On a rare sunny day in London at the Google DeepMind office, Colin Murdoch saw the bank deposit from his employer come through.

It wasn’t his paycheck. Google was investing in his startup.

The fledgling company was Isomorphic Labs, the secretive artificial intelligence life sciences startup spun out of Google DeepMind after one of the biggest biological breakthroughs in the last 50 years. The check came in November 2021, and Murdoch was on the founding team.

As DeepMind’s chief business officer, Murdoch was tasked with finding business applications for DeepMind’s innovations in AI research. With Isomorphic, Murdoch wanted to zero in on the possibilities of AlphaFold2, an AI system with the capability of predicting the structures of proteins.

The viral program was developed by DeepMind in 2020 and helped solve a mystery that had flummoxed biologists for 50 years. If applied correctly, it had the potential to find new treatments for diseases like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and cancer. The system would go on to win a Nobel Prize in chemistry.

It also helped Murdoch, and Isomorphic’s founder Demis Hassabis, decide on an ultimate goal: to “solve all disease” through AI-powered drug discovery.

“When AlphaFold came along, I think Demis and I looked at this and we thought, ‘Well, what could we do with AlphaFold?’” Murdoch, now Isomorphic’s president, told CNBC in an interview by video chat. “Really, that was a signal that we could begin to apply AI in this world of drug discovery.”

Hassabis remains with Isomorphic as CEO, and is simultaneously running DeepMind, the Google division at the forefront of the search company’s efforts to compete in the tech industry’s ongoing AI race. While Isomorphic is an independent unit of Google parent Alphabet, Hassabis’ dual roles reflect the intertwined relationship between the two parties.

Isomorphic has never revealed how much Google initially invested in 2021. But last month, the company locked down its first external funding in a $600 million round led by Thrive Capital with participation from GV, formerly known as Google Ventures, as well additional capital from Alphabet. With its fresh capital, Isomorphic plans to expand into biologics and to add compute to power its work in AI.

The drug discovery market is expected to reach $71 billion in value by 2025 as AI continues to change the industry.

On average, it can take anywhere between 10 and 15 years — and sometimes more than $2 billion — for a drug to make it from the bench to final approval from the Food and Drug Administration. It also costs hundreds of millions of dollars to conduct clinical trials on potential new drugs. For drugs that fail those trials, that’s a sunk cost. But using AI in drug discovery could make the process more efficient and less costly, leading to more successful drugs that make it to market.

Since its founding, Isomorphic has grown to more than 200 people and has established partnerships with Eli Lilly and Novartis, two of the world’s largest pharmaceutical companies. They pay Isomorphic, in part, to help make sure their long-term bets pay off down the line. The two partnerships include both upfront and milestone payments and “have the potential to be worth nearly $3 billion to Isomorphic Labs,” per the company, minus potential royalties resulting from future drug sales.

Google DeepMind and Isomorphic on Wednesday made AlphaFold3 available to the scientific community, for non-commercial use. The system can “predict the structures of and interactions between all life’s molecules,” Isomorphic said. “This goes beyond predicting proteins to DNA, RNA, and ligands and much more which is important for advancing drug discovery and biological understanding.”

Using AI to ‘solve’ disease

Murdoch, 46, wanted to be a doctor growing up, but his squeamishness led him to abandon the idea in favor of tech and engineering. DeepMind’s research into protein structures rekindled his interest in medicine.

The announcement of AlphaFold2 in 2020 — a step up from the initial version in 2018 — took the life sciences world by storm. That’s because proteins are one of the main building blocks of the cell, driving all chemical reactions that make up life as we know it. Whichever shape they fold into, of virtually infinite possibilities, decides their function.

If you can predict a protein’s shape, you can predict its function, and since research suggests that many diseases are influenced by incorrectly folded proteins, the research made waves.

Shortly after AlphaFold2′s release, Murdoch and Hassabis assembled a group of DeepMind employees to explore the ways the AI system could be put to use. After several months, they identified areas where they thought AI could make a difference in drug discovery, and put together a business plan for Isomorphic that they pitched to Alphabet.

The Google parent “thought it was a phenomenal idea,” Murdoch said.

Alphabet decided to spin off Isomorphic from DeepMind, tasking the startup with using the AlphaFold technology to deliver biomedical breakthroughs and advance drug design programs.

In early 2022, the team was made up of just over a dozen people, working out of a temporary office space in King’s Cross, London’s tech hub.

Since then, Isomorphic has been operating in quasi-stealth mode, keeping mostly quiet about its work and advancements. In recent years, representatives for Isomorphic have said the company wasn’t “quite ready to share our progress yet,” and that executives were shying away from media interviews as the company built its technology and added talent.

The DeepMind employees who had been working on Isomorphic didn’t all stay after the spinout. Hassabis and Murdoch had to hire a team from scratch. They started with the C-Suite: a chief technology officer, chief AI officer, chief scientific officer and chief people officer. From there, they hired experts in therapeutics and machine learning.

“We’ve put a huge amount of energy and effort into building what we call an interdisciplinary culture that combines these two sorts of expertise,” Murdoch said. “That blend of AI and drug discovery expertise is absolutely essential to doing what we’re doing.”

Chess prodigy, knight and AI ‘rockstar’

Hassabis, 48, is one of the most important people at Google.

He co-founded DeepMind in 2010 with the goal of building “general-purpose” AI, and he sold the startup to Google in 2014, reportedly for between $400 million and $650 million. DeepMind served as one of Google’s key AI research divisions for years.

But that was upended in late 2022, when OpenAI released its ChatGPT chatbot, ushering in the age of generative AI and forcing Google to step on the accelerator.

DeepMind and Hassabis’ importance within Google have only risen since.

Google merged DeepMind with Google Brain, another AI research unit at the search company, to become Google DeepMind in April 2023. Hassabis was tapped to lead the combined division. More power shifted his way last October, when the Gemini app, which includes Google’s direct-to-consumer AI products, was moved under the Google DeepMind umbrella.

Through the drastic changes at DeepMind since 2023, Hassabis has continued in his other CEO role at Isomorphic.

“All the AI talent that’s at the company, led by Demis, they have cutting-edge research talent, [and] a lot of these folks could go work at any AI lab — it didn’t have to be a bio-focused one,” said Vince Hankes, a partner at Thrive Capital.

Hankes calls Hassabis “an extraordinarily special entrepreneur.”

People who have known Hassabis for years describe him the way they would a celebrity, expressing awe, respect and a slight air of incredulity that he knows who they are. He’s a chess prodigy, a Nobel Prize winner and, as of 2023, a knight — Sir Demis Hassabis.

Krishna Yeshwant, GV managing partner, said meeting Hassabis at Oxford University years ago was like “meeting a rockstar.” Already, Hassabis’ accomplishments were well known, but he remained approachable and didn’t resort to jargon to talk about his work in AI.

“Before DeepMind was acquired, even back then, he was thinking with a mindset towards breakthroughs,” Yeshwant said.

GV invested in Isomorphic because of the startup’s strength in both AI and therapeutics. Although GV invests across many areas of tech and biotech, Isomorphic struck Yeshwant as unique because of how Hassabis thinks.

“In biotech, you run these experiments, and sometimes experiments don’t work, and sometimes they do. And when they do, you move humanity forward in some way,” Yeshwant said. “In tech, it’s not always set up that way. It’s often, ‘Did we sign the next customer? Did we develop this feature?’”

“It’s unusual to see a person taking somewhat of that same [biotech] approach in technology,” Yeshwant said. “Demis, to his credit, has been doing it that way for a long time.”

Hassabis told CNBC in a statement that he believes improving human health is one of the most important use cases for AI.

“We’ve got this amazing tool that could finally unlock some of the biggest mysteries around disease and help us overcome them,” Hassabis said in the statement. “The idea of a future where people are healthier for longer, that’s what really excites me.”

Expanding operations and adding compute

Now that Isomorphic is beginning to open up, the startup says it plans to use its first external funding to expand into the field of biologics.

Currently, Isomorphic can use its general-purpose engine to design small-molecule drugs quickly — imagine a pill that you can take as a treatment — but the expansion into biologics opens up the potential range of diseases that the startup will be able to tackle, since biologics are typically injections rather than pills, Murdoch said.

“We’re primarily focused on cancer and immunology with our own internal programs, and so we’ll be able to take those further, run those faster and add programs,” Murdoch said.

Isomorphic will also focus on finding use cases for AlphaFold3.

The company’s new funding will also be used for compute a major issue in the AI space, where companies need all the graphics processing units (GPUs) they can access. Isomorphic will need to build more models to run at a greater scale with more data attached, both on the AI and therapeutics side.

“It’s expensive to build a full-stack life science company — and this one, they have to invest in compute, they have to invest in talent, they’ve got to invest in data, they’ve got to invest in developing assets,” Thrive’s Hankes said.

GM unveils new high-performance Cadillac Lyriq, plans to lead luxury electric vehicle sales by 2025

DETROIT — General Motors on Thursday unveiled an $80,000 all-electric Cadillac Lyriq performance version as the Detroit automaker aims to become the best-selling luxury electric vehicle brand in the U.S. this year.

Cadillac hopes to achieve that goal with an expanding lineup of electric vehicles, such as the high-performance Lyriq-V, Escalade IQ SUV and the upcoming entry-level Optiq crossover.

“We will position Cadillac as the best-selling luxury electric vehicle brand in the U.S. in 2025. Let me repeat that: the best-selling luxury electric vehicle [brand] in 2025,” Cadillac Vice President John Ross said at a news conference. “There’s no limit to what we can do in the luxury electric vehicle space.”

But the “luxury” space may not be as clear-cut as it seems. Cadillac said after Ross’ comments that it won’t include Tesla in its lineup Cadillac is positioning itself as a “luxury” automaker, even though some of its products are priced in the same ballpark as some of its rivals. A brand spokesman said Cadillac lists brands such as Audi and Mercedes-Benz as its core competitors.

“There are a few models in the Tesla lineup that may fit the luxury positioning, but they still incorporate some interesting elements into the brand,” Ross said.

In addition to Tesla, which is far ahead in the US electric vehicle market, Cox Automotive reported that Cadillac sold nearly 30,000 electric vehicles last year, just behind BMW’s approximately 51,000. Audi and Mercedes-Benz also have sales close to Cadillac. In contrast, Cox estimates that Tesla sold more than 633,000 electric vehicles in the United States last year.

Historically, the auto industry has been made up of “mainstream” brands such as Chevrolet and luxury brands such as Cadillac. But today, many brands, including Cadillac and Tesla, offer vehicles across a wide range of prices.

Tesla’s pricing ranges from about $42,500 for the Model 3 sedan to about $100,000 for vehicles like the Cybertruck and Model S Plaid. By comparison, Cadillac’s electric vehicles, once available, are expected to range in price from $54,000 for the Optiq to more than $150,000 for the Escalade IQ. Cadillac also offers a custom car, the Celestiq, for more than $300,000.

For reference, Kelley Blue Book reports that the average transaction price for a new electric vehicle was $55,544 at the end of last year. That doesn’t include consumer EV incentives, such as a federal tax credit of up to $7,500.

Cadillac expects to have five electric vehicles on the market by the end of the year, compared to three currently. That would put it on par with Tesla’s number of electric vehicles, but Tesla’s share of the U.S. electric vehicle market was still estimated to be close to 50% last year

As for the Lyriq-V, Cadillac says it will have about 615 horsepower, 650 foot-pounds of torque and a 285-mile range on a full charge. 0-60 mph acceleration is expected to be as fast as 3.3 seconds.

The Lyriq is Cadillac’s first mass-produced electric vehicle and is included in its high-performance V-Series model. The Lyrq-V is generally similar to the regular model but includes unique badging and enhanced performance parts and other accessories to improve driving dynamics.

GM says the Lyriq-V will start at $79,995 and will be sold in the U.S., Canada and other countries, with production to begin in early 2025 at GM’s Spring Hill manufacturing plant in Tennessee.

Bodies of all 67 victims of Washington plane crash found, officials say

The bodies of 67 people killed in Wednesday’s crash of an American Airlines jetliner have been recovered from two regional jets and an Army Black Hawk helicopter over the Potomac River, officials said Tuesday. The Washington Fire and EMS Department said 66 of them have been identified.

The National Transportation Safety Board, which is leading the investigation, said Tuesday that a display screen at the air traffic control tower showed the helicopter was about 300 feet at the time of the collision. That’s 200 feet higher than the maximum altitude helicopters can fly in the area, according to Federal Aviation Administration regulations, but the NTSB warned that more information is needed, which will be provided after the Black Hawk is pulled from the water.

Rescuers have been working over the past few days to remove the wreckage of the Bombardier CRJ-700 aircraft. So far, rescuers have taken out the right wing, the center fuselage, a section of the front of the cabin, the tail cone and other parts.

American Airlines Flight 5342, operated by its regional subsidiary PSA Aviation, collided with a helicopter seconds before landing at Reagan National Airport in Washington, D.C., killing all 64 passengers and three military crew members aboard the Black Hawk. Officials said the helicopter was on a training mission.

It was the worst U.S. air disaster since 2001 and the first fatal large passenger plane crash in the country in nearly 16 years.

Investigators are still looking into the cause of the collision. The NTSB said it had questioned air traffic controllers on duty that night, including those who were working at the time of the collision.

The NTSB has recovered two data recorders from the American plane, as well as the recorder from the Black Hawk helicopter.

“NTSB investigators continue to transcribe the cockpit voice recorders from both aircraft. Synchronization of the Black Hawk flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder is ongoing,” the NTSB said Tuesday.

The Federal Aviation Administration on Friday announced an indefinite ban on helicopter flights in the area near the airport.

American Airlines CEO Robert Isom told employees in a note Tuesday that the company will observe a minute’s silence on Wednesday to mark the one-week anniversary of the crash.

“Caring for and supporting all those affected by this tragedy remains our top priority,” Isom said as he visited Wichita, Kansas, where the flight originated, to meet with local employees and officials.

While air crashes are extremely rare, American Airlines said it has set up what it calls its “CARE Team” for such rare disasters.

The team is made up of about 2,000 employee volunteers from across the company, according to the airline. They are trained by the airline’s emergency planning and response team to help victims’ families and provide information from the company. The airline said they also coordinate travel arrangements; arrange child, elder or pet care; assist with logistics such as changes of clothing, toiletries and transportation; and provide a listening ear to affected family members.

American Airlines Chief Operating Officer David Seymour and other operations staff traveled to Washington, D.C. this week to support the team, Isom said.

“Our CARE team has made a significant contribution in the wake of this unimaginable tragedy, and I am proud of all they have done,” he wrote.
